Joining forces: Daniel Hug (left), President of the Johanniter-Malteser Stiftung Aide & Assistance, and Branco von Hoensbroech (right), Managing Director of the Johanniter-Malteser Stiftung Aide & Assistance in Switzerland.

Following a long and successful partnership in collecting, packaging and shipping usable relief supplies to institutions in need around the world, the foundation “Aide & Assistance” of the Order of Malta Switzerland and the Swiss Johanniterorden’s section “Materialversand ins Ausland” (Shipment of Relief Supplies Abroad) merged their activities at the beginning of 2024 to form the first joint venture between the Order of Malta and the Johanniterorden in Switzerland. Since then, they have been operating under the name “Johanniter-Malteser Stiftung Aide & Assistance”.

In view of the war in Ukraine, which continues to rage with undiminished intensity, and the great hardship in many other parts of the world, the services of the Johanniter-Malteser Stiftung Aide & Assistance remain in high demand. Almost every week, a container or articulated lorry full of relief supplies leaves Switzerland.

Between 1 January and 31 December 2024, the foundation handled a total of 42 international transports. Two articulated lorries filled with hospital furnishings, walking aids, orthopaedic devices and staple foods went to “Mission Siret”, an initiative of the Youth of the Johanniterorden and the Westphalian Commandery of the Johanniterorden, which operates a warehouse in Siret, Romania, from where relief supplies are delivered daily to Ukraine by volunteers of all denominations, including an increasing number of members of the Order of Malta. Further transports to Siret are planned for 2025.
